What is Male Infertility?
Male infertility refers to a man’s inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female partner after at least one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. It is a common issue and contributes to nearly 40–50% of infertility cases among couples. Male infertility is primarily caused by problems in sperm production, sperm function, or sperm delivery, and it can be temporary or permanent depending on the underlying cause.
Thanks to advancements in reproductive medicine, male infertility is now treatable in many cases through medical management, assisted reproductive techniques (ART), and surgical procedures.
Common Causes of Male Infertility
There are several potential causes of male infertility, which may include:
1. Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia)
When a man produces fewer sperm than normal, reducing the chance of fertilizing an egg.
2. Poor Sperm Motility (Asthenozoospermia)
When sperm have difficulty swimming or moving toward the egg.
3. Abnormal Sperm Morphology
When the shape or structure of sperm is irregular, impacting their ability to fertilize the egg.
4. Varicocele
Swelling of the veins inside the scrotum, which can impair sperm production and quality.
5. Hormonal Imbalances
Low levels of testosterone or other hormonal issues affecting sperm production.
6. Obstruction or Blockages
Any blockage in the male reproductive tract (e.g., vas deferens) that prevents sperm from being ejaculated.
7. Lifestyle Factors
Smoking, alcohol, obesity, stress, or exposure to heat and toxins can impair fertility.
8. Genetic Conditions
Chromosomal abnormalities such as Klinefelter Syndrome or Y chromosome deletions.
Diagnosis of Male Infertility
At SCI IVF Hospital, we begin with a detailed evaluation that includes:
- Semen Analysis: To assess sperm count, motility, morphology, and volume.
- Hormonal Blood Tests: To check levels of testosterone, FSH, LH, and prolactin.
- Scrotal Ultrasound: To detect varicocele or other abnormalities in the testicles.
- Genetic Testing: For identifying hereditary factors affecting sperm production.
- Testicular Biopsy: In cases of azoospermia (no sperm in semen), to evaluate sperm production.
Treatment Options for Male Infertility
1. Lifestyle Modifications
Improving diet, quitting smoking or alcohol, reducing stress, and managing weight can help restore fertility in many men.
2. Medical Treatment
Hormonal therapies, antibiotics (for infections), or medications to improve sperm count or motility.
3. Surgical Interventions
- Varicocelectomy: Surgery to treat varicocele.
- Vasovasostomy: Reversal of vasectomy to restore sperm flow.
- Surgical Sperm Retrieval (TESA, PESA, Micro-TESE): When sperm are absent in the ejaculate.
4. Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART)
- IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): For mild male factor infertility.
- IVF (In Vitro Fertilization): When sperm quality or quantity is moderately affected.
- ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection): For severe male infertility where even a single sperm can be used for fertilization.
