What is Laser-Assisted Hatching?
Laser-Assisted Hatching (LAH) is an advanced fertility technique used during the IVF process to improve the chances of embryo implantation. In this technique, a thin opening is made in the outer shell of the embryo (called the zona pellucida) using a precise laser beam, just before the embryo is transferred to the uterus.
The goal of LAH is to help the embryo “hatch” out of its shell more easily and implant into the uterine lining, especially in patients with previous failed IVF cycles or poor embryo quality.
At SCI IVF Hospital, under the expert supervision of Dr. Shivani Sachdev Gour, Laser-Assisted Hatching is performed with advanced micromanipulation tools to support couples in achieving a successful pregnancy.
Why is Laser-Assisted Hatching Done?
Embryos are surrounded by a protective layer known as the zona pellucida, which they must break through (hatch) before attaching to the uterine wall. In some cases, this natural process may not occur efficiently, leading to implantation failure.
Laser-Assisted Hatching is often recommended in the following cases:
Women over 35 years of age – Embryos may have a harder outer shell.
Frozen-thawed embryos – The zona pellucida can harden after freezing.
Repeated IVF failures – To improve implantation chances.
Embryos with thick or tough zona pellucida observed under a microscope.
Poor embryo quality or slow-growing embryos.
How to Prepare for Laser-Assisted Hatching
LAH is typically done as part of a planned IVF cycle. Preparation involves:
- A detailed consultation with your fertility specialist to determine if LAH is beneficial in your specific case.
- Standard IVF preparation, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization, and embryo culture.
- Embryo quality and development are monitored closely to decide the best time for hatching.
Laser-Assisted Hatching Procedure – Step by Step
Embryo Formation
After egg retrieval and fertilization in the lab, embryos are cultured to the Day 3 (cleavage stage) or Day 5 (blastocyst stage).Embryo Assessment
The embryologist checks the thickness and condition of the zona pellucida under a high-powered microscope. If needed, LAH is planned before transfer.Laser Application
Using a high-precision laser system, a tiny opening is made in the zona pellucida without damaging the embryo. This process takes only a few seconds and is extremely accurate and safe.Embryo Transfer
After hatching, the embryo is immediately transferred into the uterus where it has a higher chance of successful implantation.
Benefits of Laser-Assisted Hatching
- Increases implantation rates in selected patients.
- Helps older women or those with previous IVF failures.
- Assists embryos that have thick zona pellucida.
- Improves success rate in frozen embryo transfer cycles.
- Minimally invasive and safe when performed by skilled embryologists.
Risks and Limitations
- Not required for every patient – Only beneficial in specific cases.
- May slightly increase the chance of monozygotic (identical) twins.
- There is a small risk of embryo damage if not performed properly (rare in experienced hands).
- LAH does not guarantee pregnancy, but improves the odds.
Results
After Laser-Assisted Hatching and embryo transfer:
- The embryo is more likely to hatch from its shell and implant into the endometrial lining.
- Pregnancy test is done 12–14 days after embryo transfer.
- Higher implantation and pregnancy rates have been observed in selected patients undergoing LAH.
