    What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination, a type of artificial insemination and one of the simplest and least invasive fertility treatments. In this procedure, healthy and motile sperm are collected, processed in a lab, and then directly inserted into the woman’s uterus around the time of ovulation to facilitate fertilization.

The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization. This treatment is especially useful for couples facing mild male infertility, unexplained infertility, or cervical mucus issues.

    Why is IUI Done?

IUI is often the first step in fertility treatment for couples trying to conceive. It is a less complex and more affordable option compared to IVF or ICSI. IUI may be recommended in the following cases:

    1. Unexplained infertility – When the cause of infertility is unknown after thorough testing.

    2. Mild male factor infertility – Low sperm count or motility issues.

    3. Cervical factor infertility – Problems in the cervical mucus that hinder sperm movement.

    4. Ovulatory disorders – Irregular or absent ovulation.

    5. Donor sperm insemination – For single women or same-sex couples using donor sperm.

    6. Sexual dysfunction or pain – IUI can help overcome challenges related to intercourse.

    How to Prepare for IUI

At SCI IVF Hospital, under the expert guidance of Dr. Shivani Sachdev Gour, a detailed evaluation is done before proceeding with IUI. This includes:

    • Blood tests to assess hormone levels.
    • Ultrasound scans to monitor ovarian function and uterine health.
    • Semen analysis to check sperm count, motility, and morphology.
    • Ovulation tracking through blood tests and transvaginal ultrasounds.
    • Medication may be prescribed to stimulate ovulation (Clomiphene Citrate or gonadotropins).

The fertility team closely monitors the woman’s ovulation cycle to determine the best time for insemination, usually around day 12–14 of the menstrual cycle.

    IUI Procedure Step by Step

    1. Ovulation Induction (Optional)
If natural ovulation is irregular, the doctor may prescribe medications to stimulate egg release. Ovulation is tracked using blood tests or ultrasound.

    2. Semen Collection and Washing
A semen sample is collected from the male partner or donor. This sample is processed in the lab to separate the motile and healthy sperm from the seminal fluid and impurities, increasing the chances of success.

    3. Insemination
Using a thin, sterile catheter, the washed sperm is inserted directly into the uterus. The process is quick (5–10 minutes), painless, and done without anesthesia.

    4. Post-Procedure Instructions
The patient may be asked to rest briefly. There is no need for hospitalization or downtime.

    5. Supportive Medications
Progesterone or other hormonal support may be prescribed to enhance implantation.

    IUI Risks and Complications

IUI is a low-risk procedure, but like any medical treatment, it may involve:

    • Mild cramping or spotting after the procedure.
    • Infection, though rare, can occur due to the insertion of instruments.
    • Multiple pregnancies, especially when ovulation is stimulated with medications.
    • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) in rare cases, if too many follicles develop.
    • Emotional stress due to unsuccessful cycles, requiring psychological support and counseling.

    IUI Results

A pregnancy test is usually done 2 weeks after the IUI procedure to confirm success.

    • Success rates vary between 10–20% per cycle, depending on factors like age, fertility cause, and the use of fertility drugs.
    • If not successful after 3–4 cycles, advanced options like IVF or ICSI may be advised.
