RJ: On the occasion of World IVF Week, We have Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour director SCI  IVF Centre Delhi and Noida, who is a part of record making awareness activity in India and Asia Book of Records to spread awareness about IVF.

RJ: Doctor When can a patient go for IVF treatment post covid vaccination?

Dr:  There is no need to delay getting pregnant after covet19 vaccination so you can go for IVF treatment immediately or even during your covid 19 vaccination. Remember, it is a dead virus. It does not have any impact on fertility treatment and as per recent government of India guidelines. Vaccines are safe even during pregnancy and in the pre pregnancy period.

RJ: Doctor, After how long can a person go for IVF treatment if she has been infected with Covid19?

Dr: If a person has been infected with covid19, they can start IVF treatment after four weeks, if they were asymptomatic. If you have had respiratory symptoms like cough or breath listeners but did not need hospitalization, then you should wait for six weeks. If you were hospitalized for Covid19, then please wait for 8 to 10 weeks before starting treatment. If you were admitted to ICU, then you should wait for at least 12 weeks after complete recovery before you start your treatment.

RJ: On the occasion of World IVF Week, We have Dr. Shivani Sachdev Gour director of SCI IVF Centre Delhi and Noida, who is a part of record-making awareness activity in India and Asia Book of Records to spread awareness about IVF. The doctor is it safe to go for IVF treatment post covid infection?

Dr: Yes, it is safe to go for IVF treatment post covid infection. You should wait till you have recovered completely and are no longer infectious and you have been reviewed by a doctor. We know that increasing age and increasing duration of infertility both have a negative impact on the success rates for treatment.

So you should follow all the safety precautions and start your treatment.

The spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has created uncommon situations all over the world. It has awfully affected not only the economic and social system but also the health practices of countries. An essential lockdown also closed the fertility clinics abruptly. Fertility clinics only prioritized cases, where patients either had an advanced age or having gametes frozen for a long time. But a large number of patients, undergoing the fertility treatment cycles, were not able to get services. This situation demanded a new way of providing such medical services so that the ongoing treatment can be equally effective even with social distancing.

Factors affecting Infertility Treatments in Pandemic

There is no significant proof that Covid – 19 can affect human fertility, pregnant woman, or her fetus in a natural pregnancy. But there is a chance of getting infected with the virus during the treatment cycle through ART services due to the exposure risk.

  • There are various studies going on for identifying the effects of coronavirus on sperm and egg performance. Also, experts are researching the unintended effect such as exposure of gametes and embryos in viruses during the infertility treatments such as IVF.
  • Patients located in remote areas, hotspot areas, or containment zones have less accessibility to reach the hospital in a lockdown situation. They are bound to take extra precautions and care to prevent the infection at home.
  • Couples, who are eagerly waiting for the treatment to start, are not able to visit the hospitals regularly and are getting anxious in this situation.

New Ways of Handling Infertility Treatments in Pandemic Situation

Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour – the best female fertility doctor in Delhi explains the following new methods of infertility treatments.

  • In India, almost 10% of cases of infertility are due to PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome). The treatment of such cases is dependent on lifestyle changes such as modifications in diet and exercise patterns. Make sure to cut off Tran fats, junk food, and sugary drinks from your diet and include protein-rich food in your diet.
  • While the lockdown has restricted the capacity of patients to the hospital, screening through remote systems such as video calls must adopt widely. Maternal care is an essential service that cannot be postponed even in these times. If an infertility treatment is going on, that must not be interrupted. But if treatments are more focused on lifestyle regimes, it can be suggested remotely through video calls or telemedicine.
  • Infertility is also caused by the increased stress level. Since lockdown has given an opportunity to people to stay at home in their comfort zone, couples trying to become parents must pay attention to lower their stress level by yoga, meditation, and spending quality time with their partners.
  • Treatments with the least clinic visits are suggested. Infertility services are prioritized in exceptional conditions, such as oocyte or sperm cryopreservation is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer patients and increasing age of patients. Covid guidelines and sanitizing measures must be followed by the fertility clinic. SCI IVF Hospital – the best infertility clinic in Delhi NCR is following all covid related guidelines and assures uninterrupted emergency fertility treatments.

COVID-19 may alter the way infertility treatment is provided: Doctors

“Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common conditions in Indian women; one out of 10 suffers from it. The treatment is 70 percent diet modification and 30 percent exercise. Ensure your diet is low in Tran’s fat – so say no to junk food and sugar – and increase the share of protein,” said Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour, founder & director, SCI Healthcare, New Delhi.

COVID -19 is a deadly virus that has affected almost every country in the world. India has started its vaccination drive for the people of the age gap between 18 – 44 on the 1st of May, 2021. Since then, wide data has been collected that shows the fewer women are getting jabbed as compared to men. As of 19 May 2021, a total of 22.20 crore people has been vaccinated with the first dose. Among which, 11.99 crores are males and 10.20 crore are females (Source: COWIN Website). The percentage of males vaccinated with the first dose is 54%, while females vaccinated is 45.9%. This shows the number of females getting vaccinated to attest to the first dose is almost 8.1% less than males, which is much lesser than the population gender gap of India.

Reasons of Lesser Women Getting Vaccinated

Gender disparity in vaccination cannot be neglected. Vaccination is essential for everyone irrespective of gender. Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour a doctor at SCI IVF Hospital – the best surrogacy clinic in Delhi highlighted the following reasons for lesser women getting vaccinated.

  • Lack of Internet Accessibility: There is a significant gender gap in mobile phones and internet users in India. This gap is worse in the villages. Since the slot booking of covid vaccines is available through the online mode, women are not able to book it online due to the lack of technological resources.
  • Lack of Transportation Modes: Covid vaccine is available at the various covid centres all across the country. Although the government is putting every possible effort to make the vaccine available at the nearest centres, still a lot of work needs to do. Some centres are very far from remote areas and women are not able to reach there all alone as they are dependent on the males in the house.
  • Misconceptions around Vaccination: There are lots of rumours and myths spreading around the vaccination for women that creates hesitancy among the menstruating women of 18 to 44 age gaps. Some myths are the menstruating women should not take the vaccine as it affects their period cycle, cause irregular periods, and can also affect their fertility. These myths restrain the women, who are considering getting pregnant in the near future, from taking the vaccine.

How to Encourage More Women to get Vaccinated

Women are almost half of the total population. The success of the fight against covid depends on the vaccination for all. Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour – the best gynaecologist in Delhi NCR suggests the following solution for encouraging women to get vaccinated.

  • The best way to encourage women to get jab is to burst the misconception prevailing around the vaccination. Vaccination does not affect fertility at all. Although some minor irregularity in the period cycle can be observed in some women, these side-effects are temporary.
  • Some state government initiatives such as pink booths that are only for women to get vaccinated should be applied in all states across India.
  • Involvement of ASHA and Anganvadi workers to raise awareness towards vaccination and organizing vaccination drives at the nearest booth for women can also be an effective method.
